ChatGPT Ads Are Expanding: What OpenAI’s India Rollout Means for Businesses

Ads are becoming a bigger part of the ChatGPT experience.

OpenAI has announced that it will begin showing advertisements to ChatGPT Free and Go users in India, giving businesses a new way to reach people while they are using AI to research products, compare options and make decisions.

This is important because India is already one of ChatGPT’s biggest markets. OpenAI has previously said the country has more than 100 million weekly active ChatGPT users.

But the bigger story is not just about India.

It is about where AI advertising could be heading next.

OpenAI Is Opening ChatGPT to More Advertisers

OpenAI says it will initially work with around 50 brands in India as it expands its advertising programme.

The company is also preparing an Ads Manager, expected to launch next month, which will allow businesses to create and manage their own campaigns.

The starting daily budget is expected to be around ₹725, or roughly $7.60.

That could make ChatGPT advertising interesting for businesses of different sizes.

Instead of needing a massive advertising budget from day one, smaller companies could potentially test the platform with a limited amount of money and see whether it produces useful results.

Our advice would be simple: test before you scale.

Don’t throw a large advertising budget at a platform just because it is new.

Start with one product or service, measure the results and increase spending only if the numbers make sense.

Why ChatGPT Ads Could Be Different

ChatGPT Ads Are Expanding

There is something unusual about advertising inside an AI chatbot.

When someone sees an advert while scrolling through social media, they may have no intention of buying anything.

ChatGPT is different because people often open it with a question.

For example:

“What’s the best laptop for video editing?”

Or:

“Which accounting software is suitable for a small business?”

Or:

“Compare these three smartphones.”

These users are already researching.

That makes the timing of an advertisement potentially very valuable.

OpenAI says its ads will appear in relevant commercial situations and will be clearly separated from ChatGPT’s answers.

For advertisers, that creates an interesting opportunity: getting in front of potential customers while they are actively thinking about a purchase.

What Businesses Should Do Now

We think businesses should pay attention to this development, even if ChatGPT advertising is not currently available in their market.

The first thing to do is not necessarily buy ads.

Instead, look at your website.

Can an AI assistant quickly understand what your company does?

Your website should clearly explain:

  • What you sell
  • Who you serve
  • Your main products or services
  • Your prices or pricing structure
  • Where you operate
  • How customers can contact you
  • What makes you different from competitors
  • Answers to common customer questions

This is useful for traditional search engines too.

As more people use AI to research businesses and products, being clearly represented online becomes increasingly important.

ChatGPT Ads Are Already Going Global

India is not the first market where OpenAI has introduced advertising.

The company began testing ChatGPT ads in the United States earlier this year and has since expanded the programme into other markets.

OpenAI has also started rolling out ads across Europe.

The European expansion alone covers 31 countries, bringing the advertising programme to a much larger international audience.

That makes the Indian launch look less like an isolated experiment and more like part of OpenAI’s wider advertising strategy.

Free Users Will See the Ads

For users, the important part is knowing who will actually see these advertisements.

OpenAI says ads will be shown to logged-in adults using the Free and Go plans.

Users on higher-priced plans such as Plus and Pro will not see the ads. Business and Enterprise users are also outside the advertising experience.

OpenAI has also said that ads will be clearly labelled and kept separate from ChatGPT’s answers.

The company says advertisers will not receive users’ private conversations and that advertising will not influence the answers ChatGPT provides.

That will be an important issue as the advertising programme grows.

People don’t use AI chatbots exactly like traditional websites. Conversations can be personal, detailed and sometimes sensitive.

So users will naturally want to know where advertising ends and the AI’s answers begin.

The Bigger Business Picture

There is also a financial reason why this expansion matters.

OpenAI has been looking for ways to grow its revenue as it continues investing heavily in artificial intelligence.

Advertising gives the company another potential source of income without requiring every user to become a paying subscriber.

That could be especially useful because ChatGPT has a huge free-user base.

Instead of asking every free user to pay, OpenAI can potentially make money from the businesses trying to reach those users.

That is a model we have seen across much of the internet.

But putting advertising into an AI conversation is a very different experience from putting a banner on a webpage.

And that is where things could get interesting.

The Real Opportunity for Advertisers

We believe the biggest opportunity isn’t simply “advertising on ChatGPT.”

It is advertising at the moment someone is making a decision.

That could eventually change how businesses think about online marketing.

Companies may need to pay closer attention to the questions customers ask AI tools before they make a purchase.

For example, a company selling cameras shouldn’t only think about advertising its latest camera.

It should also understand questions like:

  • What camera is best for beginners?
  • What’s the best camera for travel?
  • Which camera is good for YouTube?
  • Mirrorless or DSLR?
  • What camera should I buy under $1,000?

Those questions reveal what people actually want.

Businesses that understand those questions can create better websites, better products, better content and, eventually, better advertising campaigns.

Should You Be Worried About Ads in ChatGPT?

If you are a free ChatGPT user, you may not love the idea.

Nobody enjoys seeing more advertising.

But there is another way to look at it.

Free services need a way to pay for the enormous cost of operating them. Advertising is one of the oldest ways internet companies have solved that problem.

The important question is whether OpenAI can introduce advertising without making ChatGPT feel like a giant shopping platform.

That balance will probably determine how users react as the programme expands.

Our Take

The most interesting thing about this announcement isn’t the first 50 brands in India.

It is what happens after the experiment.

If businesses discover that advertising through AI conversations can generate valuable customers, expect more companies to want access.

And if the model works well, more markets could eventually follow.

For businesses, the lesson is straightforward:

AI is becoming another place where customers discover, compare and choose products.

You don’t need to start spending money on AI advertising today.

But you should start understanding how customers are using AI to make decisions.

Because the next major battle for online attention may not happen on a search results page or social media feed.

It may happen inside the conversation.

And businesses that prepare early could have a head start.
