Xiaomi has officially launched the new Redmi 17 5G and Redmi 17 4G for global markets, starting with Malaysia. The two phones target users looking for affordable smartphones with a large screen and very long battery life.
The biggest highlight is the 7,500mAh battery inside both models. That is larger than what we usually see in most budget smartphones. Xiaomi says the phones support 45W fast charging and can also charge other devices through 22.5W reverse charging.
Big screen with 120Hz refresh rate
Both phones feature a 6.9-inch LCD display with HD+ resolution and a 120Hz refresh rate. The screen is protected by Gorilla Glass 7i, making it more resistant to scratches and everyday wear.
Redmi 17 5G vs Redmi 17 4G
The main difference between the two phones is the processor:
- Redmi 17 5G: Snapdragon 4 Gen 5
- Redmi 17 4G: MediaTek Helio G91 Ultra
The 5G model also comes with faster UFS storage, while the 4G version uses eMMC storage, which is slower. Both phones are available with 4GB RAM and storage options up to 256GB.
Camera setup
Xiaomi has kept the camera setup straightforward:
- 50MP rear camera
- 8MP selfie camera
- 1080p video recording
The camera system is designed mainly for everyday photos, video calls, and social media use.

Both Redmi 17 models include:
- IP64 dust and water resistance
- Side-mounted fingerprint sensor
- NFC support
- 3.5mm headphone jack
- HyperOS 3 based on Android 16
Estimated Nigerian prices
Xiaomi has not announced official Nigerian prices yet, but based on current exchange rates, the phones could sell for roughly:
- Redmi 17 4G: around ₦223,000
- Redmi 17 5G: around ₦256,000
- Redmi 17 5G (256GB): around ₦289,000
Actual prices may differ when the phones arrive in Nigeria due to import costs, taxes, and retailer pricing.

Xiaomi is clearly using battery life as the biggest selling point here. A 7,500mAh battery in a budget phone is uncommon, and it should appeal to users who spend long hours on WhatsApp, TikTok, YouTube, gaming, or work without easy access to a charger.
For Nigerians, the Redmi 17 5G looks like the better option if 5G coverage is available in your area, while the Redmi 17 4G should be the cheaper choice for everyday use.
Xiaomi has not confirmed a Nigerian launch date yet, but if these phones arrive close to the estimated prices above, they could become strong competitors in the entry-level Android market.
